Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program

Selection criteria
Target group: Master's degree, Bachelor's degree , PhD degree

Countries: All
Eligible candidates: mid-career professionals from the World Bank member countries, eligible to borrow; Between the ages of 25 and 45; At least 2, preferably 4 to 5, years of recent full-time professional work experience; University degree; Good health, good character
The Program does not support:- legal studies such as JD, LLM or SJD unless related to human rights, or environment.
- applicants for MBA, nor applicants for M.Phil. or Ph.D. candidates.
- applicants who already hold a graduate degree from an industrialized country.
- applicants who received their undergraduate degree from an industrialized country unless they spent three years in their home country or another developing country.
- permanent residents or nationals of industrialized countries.
· those with refugee or asylum status.


Grant information
Value and purpose of grant : The JJ/WBGSP scholarship provides annual awards to cover the cost of completing a master's degree or its equivalent. The amount of scholarship may vary depending upon the host country and the tuition charged by the host university. In recent years the annual value of a scholarship has averaged around US$30,000.
The scholarship provides benefits for the recipient only, covering:

  • economy class air travel between the home country and the host university at the start of the study program and one return journey following the end of the overall scholarship period. In addition to the ticket, scholars receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip; 
  • tuition and the cost of basic medical and accident insurance usually obtained through the university; 
  • a monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses, including books.
Grant award period : 1 year; provided that the academic program is longer than one year, it may be renewed for a second consecutive year or a portion thereof.

Applications must include :
  • application form
  • CV
  • two professional and two academic recommendation letters
  • evidence of current unconditional admission (copy of formal admission letter) to at least one development-related university master's degree program and proof of application to another university located in any World Bank member country except the applicant's country. Preference is given to applicants with more than one admission. 
  • copy of passport or birth certificate
  • certified copy of diploma (at least a BA degree) and transcripts
  • proposal for a program of study related to development at the master's level, in fields such as economics, public administration, finance, planning, health, population, agriculture, infrastructure, information systems and aquatic resources (provided that the focus of study is on public policy aspects of these fields), environment and natural resource management, education, and other development-related subjects.
